Deakin University is one of the newer universities in Australia, having been formally established in 1974 (and enrolling its first students in 1977). Through a series of mergers with other Victorian educational institutions, it has grown rapidly from around 8,000 students in 1990 more than 40,000 enrolled students as of 2011.

Its medical school is also a new endeavour, with the first cohort of students beginning the course in 2008. The Deakin medical curriculum was originally purchased from Flinders, and indeed the admissions process was, until recently, very similar as well. The primary medical campus is located at Waurn Ponds in Geelong. Deakin School of Medicine's stated aim is to "address rural/regional workforce shortages" [1] and much of the admissions process is geared towards that aim.

Applicants who can demonstrate having completed at least 12 months of full-time clinical practice as a registered health professional receive a 2% bonus to their combined GPA/GAMSAT score. Deakin defines clinical experience as working in one of the following areas [2]:

Deakin has a new Indigenous Entry Scheme available from 2015 which does not require applicants to have sat GAMSAT [4].
