The Flinders University of South Australia was founded in 1966 and named in honour of Matthew Flinders, the 19th century explorer of much of the coastline of present-day South Australia. Despite its relative youth and small size, it regularly punches above its weight in terms of international competitiveness, a fact demonstrated by its place inside the top 200 for medicine in the latest QS World University Rankings. Indeed, Flinders was one of the pioneers of graduate medicine and the PBL process in Australia.

Aside from being the only graduate medical school in South Australia, Flinders has, since 2012, become the only university offering a medical program in the Northern Territory through the Northern Territory Medical Program.

Prerequisites

From the 2016 admissions cycle onwards, 75% of all graduate medicine places at Flinders will be reserved for Flinders graduates. This means that only 28 places (for 2016 entry) will be available for graduates of other universities [1].

Application Bonuses

Whilst not a bonus per se, Flinders will sometimes accept applicants for interview with exceptional GPAs but a GAMSAT below the cutoff [1].

Required Documentation

Applicants for the PRCC or Indigenous streams must complete additional documentation, as per the 'Other Comments' section of this page [1].

Applicants for any subquota place (rural origin, humanitarian visa, Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander, NT residency) are required to submit statutory declarations confirming their status [2].

Other Comments

As of 2014, Flinders has switched from awarding an MBBS to awarding an MD.

As of the 2016 admissions cycle, Flinders handles applications internally in collaboration with the South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC) rather than through the GEMSAS system.

Flinders has a Parallel Rural Community Curriculum (PRCC) subquota available, whereby up to 24 applicants will undertake at least part of their studies in a rural community [1]. PRCC applicants must complete an autobiographical statement, two interviews and a scenario.

Flinders also has a separate Indigenous Entry Stream. Applicants do not need to sit GAMSAT and applications are made directly to the university, with successful applicants being placed to the Northern Territory to complete their degree [2].

All information relating to Flinders admissions can be found in the MD Admissions Guide, available here.
