The University of Sydney is Australia's oldest university, having been founded in 1850 and receiving its Royal Charter from Queen Victoria in 1858. Its medical school is likewise the oldest in Australia, having been established in 1856. The Sydney Medical School ranks as one of the top medical schools internationally, placing 17th in the most recent QS World Rankings (second only in Australia to the University of Melbourne).

The medical program at USyd markets itself as one that places a heavy emphasis on clinical contact (with hospital exposure commencing on day one of the program) as well as evidence-based medicine.

Rural applications must have a minimum GPA of 4.50 (compared to 5.00 for non-rural applicants)

Application Bonuses

In previous years, applicants with a research degree (either PhD or Masters by research) would automatically overcome the GPA regardless of their undergraduate GPA [1]. It was also previously the case that applicants with a research doctorate were granted an additional 3% to their final admissions score [2]. As of the 2017 admissions cycle, these are no longer the case.

Required Documentation

Applicants are required to have their GPA calculated formally by the UAC Qualification Assessment Service. This service currently costs $120.

Other Comments

Applicants must meet a minimum required MMI score to be eligible for an offer of a place. The minimum score will be determined by the School based on the outcome of the interview process and applicants will not be offered a place unless they meet the minimum score [1].

As of the 2015 admissions cycle, The University of Sydney has converted their MBBS course to an MD course with a mandatory research component [2].
